John’s background as a lawyer and accountant is very beneficial when he is helping his publicly-traded clients navigate SEC reporting requirements, John also has specialized training in business valuation, expert witness testimony and preparation of forecasts and projections.
Prior to founding his own firm in 1982, John held audit positions in Dallas at Deloitte & Touche, one of the “Big Four” firms, and two large local Houston firms, Pannell Kerr Forster & Co., P.C. (formerly Goldberg Westheimer & Co.) and Weinstein, Spira & Co. John’s educational accomplishments include a BBA, Cum Laude, from the University of North Texas, and a J.D. from the South Texas College of Law.
In late 2006, John accepted a part-time position as Chief Financial Officer for Powered Corporation, a development-stage company that plans on designing, building and operating electrical power plants overseas. Powered’s initial Form S-1 registration statement was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 13, 2007.
John served as the audit committee chairman on the board of directors of Houston-based North American Technologies Group, Inc. (ticker NATK) from July 2003 until there was a change of control in October 2004. NATK is traded on the NASDAQ Small Cap market exchange.
In 2004, John was appointed to the AICPA Task Force on Internet Accounting, which was formed to study and recommend regulatory rule changes on the practice of auditing and tax preparation for clients located in states where the preparer does not have an office.
John has also participated in the 2005 AICPA response to the currently-ongoing General Accounting Office study on the effect of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on small public companies.
Actively involved in his community and his profession, John is a member of the American Institute of CPA’s and the AICPA Securities and Exchange Commission Practice Section; the Texas Society of CPAs; and the American Bar Association and Houston Bar Association. John is a member of Mensa and has served as a board member and President for the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce, has been a board member and served as President of the Brays Forest Homeowners Association and has been a board member of the Travelers Aid Society, a United Way Agency, the Greater Houston Partnership, the Maplewood Homeowners Association and others throughout his career.
John Malone grew up in Waco, Texas as the son of a U.S. Marine Corps officer who fought in World War II. He has lived in Houston since 1979. He is married with a 14-year-old stepson and a 4-year-old daughter. His hobbies have included civic volunteer work, adventure trips, music and reading. Currently, he motorcycles on his Yamaha FJR1300 sport-touring bike and he reads a wide variety of literature.
